looking at a MF gas tractor, old man does not know what it is. the hood has a nice rattle-can paint job without decal replacement. i would like to gather more info before a price is discussed. it has a Z145 gas Cont. engine, 6 spd trans, and has the sheet metal styling of a 275 era tractor. the serial number is 9A288538. it seems to be in good shape, but i would like to at least know the model number, the man also said he bought it new in the 80's, but does not have the original sales invoice. hopefully somone can tell me the model off of this info, if more info is needed, i will try to get it in a timely manner. thanks for any help.

It could be one of two models. The Massey 230 and the 245 both used the gas Z145 engine. Both had the same number of gears and the same appearance. The 245 had a few other shift options available in the day. The 230 appears to have clam shell type fenders where the 245 had fenders that covered the rear wheel. The 230 had only 2 headlights in the grill. The 245 had 2 additional lights in the fenders. Other than finding a tag on the tractor, thats about all I can help with on these models.

I think the model is on the serial number plate. If not look closely at the decals on the hood. It is a 1978 model and not from the 80's. 230's and 245's are both excellent tractors. The 230 is basically a lower HP economy model of the 245. Dave

Dave, 245"s had the clamshell fenders standard, the ones with lights were optional. I run two, a 1978 and a 1980?, both bought new, both with clamshell fenders. Supposedly, the last year of the 245"s had rectangular headlights in the grill. FWIW.

Wow, the books I pulled out today only showed the clamshell fenders on the orchard model for the 245. Good to know! Can't rely on the books to determine models I guess. I pulled the 79 catalog as well as the 78 to see the info. Thanks for posting this!

After the first 245 was bought I saw one with the lighted fenders, seemed a lot like the 100 series fenders(150, 165, etc). I thought they were "cooler" looking than the clamshells. Oh well, after 33 years the clamshells still get the job done:)

How is yours for working after dark? We have a couple of the 2000 series, and to be honest, with just the front lights on at night, I would rather drive with a flashlight in hand. I am guessing there is a lack of light when I was looking at that 230 info today.

Not so much. I don"t do much at night so it"s not a -huge- problem. When I have had to use them, they aren"t much, the 255 is much better with the fender lights.
