165 won't start, just makes a click

so NY just got a good amount of snow and more is coming tomorrow...
went out to the 165 gas, which i have the back blade hooked up to (preferred way of dealing with snow), turned the key and it just made an audible "click".
I am not too good with electrical stuff...
the "click" seemed to come from on/near the voltage regulator...also a wire coming down from it seemed to jump a little when the key was turned.
there did not seem to be any noise coming from the starter or the solenoid.

how do i figure out what is bad?

thanks.

Any chance of looking for this -- sounds like a electrical spark -- in a darkened shed or building? At nite ? You may be able to find it easier that way. Maybe with some help?

if your battery is good, your battery cable probably has a bad connection ,the click was it arcing thru the bad connection between the battery post and cable end, or its loose on the starter and it arced there.

Check the battery ground cable where it is attached to the engine or frame. I have found the bolt holding that cable slightly loose more than once. It does not take much looseness to cause
exactly the same problem.

Put your hand on the starter sol and turn the key, if the click is the sol you will be able to feel it. If the sol is energizing the starter is bad. Tap on it, you may get a few more starts out of it.

Not sure if your 165 gasser has the same starter setup, but my 165D has given me trouble from the safety interlock in the starter circuit. I had to reach in & hold the contacts down while hitting the starter button.

Also, I finally gave up the old battery cables & put in some new ones. The old clamps at the battery posts were too stretched to properly tighten on the posts.

update:
did not see any arcing
put my hand on the solenoid, did not feel a click
battery cables, pos and neg. are new, re-tightened them
still getting an audible "click" from near the voltage regulator
how do i diagnose from here? is a dead battery possible...kinda frustrated...prefer having my gasser in operation during the winter...
thanks for suggestions so far.

Dead battery is always a possibility, although I think they are more likely to die "overnite" in hot weather rather than cold. The clicking noise at the vreg is a new one on me, must be the charge circuit opening & closing.....why the starter circuit would cause that???....but I'm not an electrical expert.

One way to test the battery on the tractor is hookup a jumper cable on the positive post of the battery first & then touch the other end directly to the starter stud(do not clamp it). This bypasses the starter button & solenoid. MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL IF YOU TRY THIS; otherwise the tractor can run over you.
