Location of Hydraulic Oil Filter on MF165?

I have a series 1 MF165 and I'd like to check the hydraulic oil filter.

I was told it was accessible via the side plate. I've drained the transmission oil and removed the right-hqnd side access plate (the one with the sensitivity level and dipstick) but there's no sign of any filter anywhere inside.

I looked in the IHS shop manual and the exploded parts drawing shows a filter sitting on top of the pump but says absolutely nothing about how to access it. Do I need to remove the plate where the difflock lever is instead in order to gain access to the filter?

Gday Eric,
I dunno where David P is? He would normally give you the run down on this one.
I can only speak of the English build MF 165's, so if yours is, you will need to remove the LHS round cover from the centre housing. That's the one with the PTO shifter on it. This should be possible if your machine has a mechanical PTO fitted, no possible if it's fitted w/IPTO. You mention "series 1" so it should have a standard PTO.
Once the cover is removed, clip the wire retaining the top of the filter assembly, and unscrew the top. The washable strainer may come away with the top half. A lower half may be left behind sitting on the pump inlet manifold. Remove this as well, and also the sealing "O" ring from under the lower half too.
Refitting is the fun bit, as lining up the "thread" on the filter assembly, and getting it started back into the manifold, is like winning an argument with your missus, it's always tedious, and takes plenty of time!!
see how you go,
Evan.

Is that a Welsh expletive David? In other words to use a Dylan Thomas-ism you can do 'Llareggub' with your computer at the moment.

Hint to the uninitiated, it is not just some plows that are reversible.

Evan,

Many thanks for the response. Yes, I'd say it would be an English-assembled tractor being that we're in NZ and tt does have a mechanical PTO because I have to mesh gears to engage it.

So, since the oil is drained, I'll proceed to remove the other plate. Unfortunately the earthquake didn't shake it off for me! I've got big hands so it may be a bit of an act as from the other side it looked pretty tight for room inside the transmission housing ...

Eric, Don't use a service manual. Your owner man
will give you good instructions how to service.
If you have Independent live pto you will have an
extra filter that hangs down. The other sits along the lower hyd pump, it has a metal cap over
it. But your o/m will show it well. Chuck

Chuck,

Thanks for that additional information. Unfortunately I got the tractor 3rd hand and it was used (abused) many years by and agricultural contractor so there were no manuals supplied. Its pretty worn and I looks as though it wasn't maintained all that well hence the reason I'm sorting out the maintenance aspects and replacing bits.

The Christchurch Library only has one the third-party shop manuals, no owners manuals. Not sure how I can easily get one in a hurry, unless someone can post a couple of pages extracted from the relevant section.

Evan,

I've got the job done now. You were right - it was a pig of a job to re-fit the filter and get the shaft thread started into the manifold. My hands were too big to do it so had to enlist the help of a mate. We made a new gasket for the cover when reassembling just in case.

Some idiot had fitted a paper filter there many moons ago - it had all but disintegrated.

We were going to wire the cap on to the frame but couldn't see anywhere to pass the wire through.

Thanks again for the help received on this forum.
