massey ferguson 135 tractor

I have just bought my first old tractor 1966 MF 135. The tractor was shed kept, so is in great condition. I have changed the anti freeze, engine oil and transmission oil and filters. THe next step is the brakes. How hard will this be? Is this something anyone can do? Any prints to go by? Where can I get info on my tractor,( # made in that year, where made, where sold etc)?

"Is this something anyone can do"? That's sort of a trick question. Anyone...? Well.... Anyone with reasonable mechanical skills? Yes.

ESPECIALLY so if you plan on keeping the tractor, I'd suggest getting the OWNERS MANUAL, the SERVICE MANUAL, and the PARTS MANUAL, all available through AGCO/MF, or you'll find 'em on Ebay. Service manual will take you step by step through the brakes (as well as the entire tractor)

The serial # will tell you a good bit. UNFORTUNATELY, MF pooled ALL 100 series serial #'s together (ie 135, 150, 165, 175, 180) So there's no accurate way of determining EXACTLY how many 135's were built in any individual year. (Lots of "approximate numbers" floating about) Unless you can back track to an individual owner or dealer, and can find sales records, not much available on where/who it was originally purchased.

IF (and I'm assuming) it is a US market 135, it was probably built in Detroit Michigan.

There should be a small metal ID plate on the lower dash with serial number, point of origin, ect. That serial # will tell you quite a bit.

Hi,
MF Poor has said it all really. There are a number of postings on this forum about 35 and 135 brakes by myself and others. Some of these will detail the one important fault area to look for and how to rectify it that i not mentioned in any manual. Do a search and you should fid it.
I would echo the fact that a manual, genuine if possible is essential.

Massey Ferguson Rep said that my tractor was built in the UK and that was all that he could tell me due to privacy laws.

I found the operators manual and am still looking for service and parts.

I have 35 years working underground in the coal mines so mechanical jobs are not to much of a worry but I really want this tractor to be sound and safe, that is the reason for the questions.

Your rep is full of it. 1966 had the highest build numbers of all 135's. UK production numbers are readily available but even the dealer I used to go to had no clue about UK serial numbers. In 1966 37,313 UK 135's were built. This is up from 30,181 built in 1965(first year) and 25,707 built in 1967. Make sure you get UK model manuals. There are some differences between UK and US models. The general consensus is that the UK models are built a little better than the US models. All are excellent tractors though. Your serial number should be between 30,283 and 67,596 for your tractor to be a 1966. The dealer should be able to get all the manuals you need. Original MF manuals are the best to get. Dave

UK 135's were built in Coventry, England at the famous Banner lane plant. It was the largest tractor manufacturing plant in the world before it was closed several years ago. Dave

Hi Ken,
If you have any doubt as to whether your 135 is UK or US built probably the easiest way to identify it is by the location of the '135' medallion. All UK tractors had the medallion at the front of the bonnet (hood) and as far as I am aware all US ones had it at the rear. I believe that US tractors had the front of the bonnet removable as well. I have posted a photo of my 1965 UK 135 after its second refurbishment and a couple of days before our farm sale in 2007.
Look closely there are likely to be other differences as well.
