Keeping motor from spinning MF135UK

I am removing the clutch and flywheel and the engine keeps spinning over on me while i am trying to break the bolts free. Any tricks or tools to keep the engine from moving on me. I'm thinking tightening them will be much more easy since i will have the engine compression helping me, but as far as unbolting goes, i can turn the thing by hand. My tractor is a MF135UK with the diesel engine.

Hello Tim,
It is difficult to stop the flywheel turning without some physical blocker. For the last nearly 37 years I have used one of the 7/16 x 3 clutch housing bolts. If you place the head of the bolt near the 12 o'clock position engaged in the starter ring teeth and then allow the flywheel to turn a little. The bolt head will become jammed between the ring and engine back plate. This will provide a very positive blocker.
Change sides when you wish to tighten.

That's when an impact comes in handy for disassembly. They'll zip the bolts loose before the engine has a chance to spin.

When I was trying to break the bolts free on the clutch they got nicked up, i'm thinking about replacing them. Should i replace them with grade 8 bolts or just the standard grade 5 (i think they are). I was thinking about hitting them with an impact today to get them loose.

Hello,
If you have access to an impact wrench, fine. Do you have access to 3/4unf or 19mm hexagon or air wrench sockets?
I would not use ordinary soft bolts. They should be gen MF ones or at least high tensile.

That's true, but he said he's tearing down and that's where they really shine.
