gasoline leak

MF 165 - glass filter directly under tank on port side- looks like gas leaking out of pit-cock toggle on top of glass assembly (there is a 7/16 nut between pitcock and glass....tightened alittle, but didn't slow leak). Leaks when open or closed.

I don't think I have a oring above glass....unless it's stuck up there....I don't think thats where it's leaking.

Problem #2- Carb on starboard side always wet with gas. no drips. NOT coming from problem #1

(BTW- I need to screw with my choke lever sometimes hot or cold. Not sure if this is related or relavent)

SAVE MY MPG!!!

G'morning, I fought a similar battle w/135. Depending on the condition of the gas in the glass bowl (clean or dirty? sediment on the bottom of bowl?) This problem might start in the tank itself. My situation was rectified by finally removing the tank & having it cleaned & relined. Anyways, DRAIN tank, I would check first at the glass bowl/petcock assembly by removing each, bowl gasket is part of a screen that might stick in/on the fitting instead of coming off with the bowl, just look underneath w/mirror-it slides off at the center & clean, remove petcock & clean-might have rust or other, preventing it from sealing tight- but if necessary replace-expensive little booger tho. Next- the carb- remove and dissassemble-clean, & if it hasn't been done recently- rebuild w/new float valve kit (sounds like it is either has crap holding it open or the float needs readjusting-it'll eliminate issues later. while all this is apart-blow fuel line too! reassemble everything & try w/gallon of gas to check. I'm betting on dirt/rust in tank causing both/all problems knowing what I went thru. Good Luck. I hope this helps, Les

must stop gas leak, could be dangerous to your health!!

if what you have done did not stop the leak, just bite the bullet, drain fuel tank and replace the gas cut off valve with a new unit.

you must be able to cut off gas before you even start working on the carb.

second: I would install a inline fuel filter beteen the cutoff valve and carb. it will be the best money you every spent on the old fergy. keeps that trash out of carb.

once you have the cut off working properly then rebuild carb and you should be good to go.

do not be like me.
have good working fuel cutoff, carb will leak sometimes so i just use cutoff each time i stop tractor for any length of time. have carb kit in shop, but too lazy to install it.

I don't have a 165, but I have a MF35TO gas. Most of the leaks I've had are due to the copper line flaring at the connection. The flaring gets tiny, almost invsible cracks if the lines are old and they are tightened (so do hydraulic lines). I also would think there would/should be an O-ring where the glass bowl is seated. My 2 cents.

Unless that in line filter is made for gravity fuel systems it will restrict the fuel to the carburetor unreasonably. An in line filter made to go after a fuel pump will consistently restrict the fuel flow.

Gerald,
I have heard of that problem before, fuel filter being restrictive and not leting full flow of fuel to carb.

My son must have had one like that on his 0 turn mower, when the tank got down to 1/4 the engine would quit running. Fill tank and engine would run.
I have never had that problem with the inline fuel filters I have installed on the fergy. Just use one that is metal cased from NAPA and has the correct size inlet/outlet nipples.

Have had much less carb problems since i have been using the inline filters.
