MF 135 Axle Pinion & Ring gear backlash

Im just waiting on a new pinion and crown to come in, i was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting the proper backlash. seems like a lot of work to have to re-install the axle housing and then remove it all again in order to shim the ring gear and differential case, if the backlash isnt correct.

M.F. rely on a fairly "primitive" method of setting their rear drive gear assemblies. The pinion height cannot be altered in any way, only pre-loaded, so it goes in at a set height, (with new bearings).
This then only allows for the crown-wheel pre-load to be set as well. I am not aware of any mention in any M.F. manuals, to setting the "backlash".

I have, over the years, "blued" a gear-set, to check markings, and been horrified at the results. But after assembly, I have never had a gear-set fail, or "whine", because of it. They have always run true.
So, I would however, put the time in to setting the crownwheel preload as per the manuals, as it is the only adjustment you can do, to help in it's correct set-up. I would also recommend the fitting of "new" bearings to all components at the time of fitting.

My two cents worth,
Evan.
