MF 175 Power Steering Control Valve

I'm having trouble getting the valve apart as per the manual. Manual says to put a punch into "cross drilled hole through port B and turn valve rod end to unscrew from valve spool". I am doing that but it seems to be torqued on too hard. I'm worried about damaging the valve body or of breaking my punch off inside the valve body.

Does anybody know, if I take the oil seal off of the rod end of the valve would I be able to get in and remove the snap ring and then be able to disassemble the valve without separating the rod end from the valve spool?

Thanks,
JP.

P.S.: Oh ya, I forgot to say that the reason I want to take it apart is because the valve is leaking pretty good out of the non rod end. I'm hoping that there is something simple, like o rings, that I can fix in there.

I had the same problem with my 150. First off the IT manual refers to the wrong hole, however I too felt that I would damage the spool.

I cleaned up the linkage end real good with a small file and emery paper. Pry off the dust cover, three drive rivets. There is a felt and o-ring under it. I can't remember if there was a snap ring on the cover end or not. I then pulled out the spool with the linkage end attached. I was then able get the snap ring out of the linkage end. It is a spril snap ring, had to use a dental pick to find the leading end. Then you can replace the seal. I found the seal at a local bearing sales shop. SKF 6741 is the seal number. I was able to reuse the dust cover rivets.

Hope this helps a little, Tom

Well, I finally got my courage up and ripped the seal out of the rod end. The spiral snap ring was easy to get out, as Tom suggested (thanks Tom) even with the rod end still on. Then, of course, the whole spool assembly just slid out of the rod end.

So all I need is a new seal, and two o rings (that haven't turned to glass like the old ones) and maybe my leak will be gone for another 45 years.

Thanks again Tom. What part of the buckeye state are you in? We are straight across the lake from Cleveland. When I was a kid I thought that I lived in Cleveland because all we watched on TV were the Cleveland stations. Go Tribe! Good ol' channel 43.
