Cockshutt 40 Toy Tractor

Hi All, I just bought an "Advanced Product" Toy Cockshutt 40 Tractor built in 1954. Really nice condition and was planning to leave it alone. However, the paint on the hood and side panels is flaking off just to the touch. I plan on masking off the rest of the tractor, but I will need to repaint the hood and side panels. Any suggestions for a good spray can of paint to match original Cockshutt Red? I know the original paint is over 65 years old, but hope to get close enough to make it look decent. Thanks for any replies. Posted here and in Oliver and Cockshutt section. John in AZ

I have restored lots of toy tractors. The paint on the Cockshutt toys will peel off just looking at them. If you try to mask it and paint the hood. Any tape you put on it will pull the original paint off. I would leave as is or repaint the entire toy. Hershelparts.com or link_disallowed carries Cockshutt paint in spray cans.

I checked with Hershelparts and they have Cockshutt Red in spray can for $9.50 which is good. BUT, shipping would be $19.50. Seems a little high so I will pass.
Thanks again, John in AZ

It costs a fortune to ship hazardous materials like that. I needed a gallon of Oliver green from the AGCO dealer over the summer. They said they only get paint once or twice a year on some special deal just because of the shipping cost. He told me that in all reality,I'd be better off to go to another dealer who had it in stock if I wanted it soon.

Well Thanks again for the responses and suggestions. For the little I needed to paint to make my Cockshutt 40 Toy Tractor look respectable on my shelf I just needed to redo the hood and side panels. I removed the rest of the flacking paint on those and I found at of all places, Home Depot, a spray can of rust-oleum ultracover paint and primer in Colonial Red for $4.00. I tried it on the drawbar that I had to replace as it was missing when I got the tractor. To my eye, it was close enough to do the job and that is what I did. Just now waiting on replacement decals from Bossen Imp. in Lamont, IA. It will look just fine next to the original Cockshutt 30 wide-front I already have on the shelf. Thanks again, John in AZ
