Noticed slight movement on front tires (loader tractor) when driving my '64. Got front end up to check for bearing play, seems fine, but found movement of 1/4" or less, at spindle, when I would move wheel. higher ground speed, less movement. So not particularly annoying. Just want to be sure there's no safety concern here.

Our 4020 with 148 loader had similar symptoms which got progressively worse over time hauling heavy round bales. We found the steering arm splines to be worn (parts key 17). Easy fix since the corresponding spindle splines were fine.

Good advice Jim. Funny how I always try to estimate a JD shop charge, I'm usually never close. And I'm being plenty generous.

If that was my tractor I check & adjust front tire toe-in to 1/4''-3/8'' & replace tachometer & fuel gauge & not pay the dealer labor charge. I'll guess dealer labor charge would be $500-$750. That slight wear in frt end will be fine if it was my tractor.

Raised front end up with loader to check both sides. No vertical movement. Tried to rock wheels back/forth to check for bearing wear, tight. Only movement I could find was gripping wheel at 3 and 9 and moving horizontal. Both moved, if looking down at the spindle maybe a quarter inch "wobble".

My shop not equipped to handle disassembly. Just wondering if it needs attention and can I drive it 8 miles to JD dealer and save a couple hundred bucks. Thanks. Could use a tach and fuel guage while there.

More clarification needed are you are talking about where the kingpin part of spindle Ill call it goes through the knee? It needs addressed rapidly regardless of what kind of movement it is. Jack the other side up see if its the same. Does it need a small machinery bushing or a spindle or the brass bushings in the knee? If its only vertical motion up and down you might be safe that way for awhile but loose in the same way a wheel bearing is could mean tie rod or the list of things mentioned a lot of which affect the steering
