Hot transmission

I never noticed this before on my 401 B industrial. The transmission metal housing gets so hot I can't keep my hand on it. I'm pulling a 8 ft
flail mower. Does this sound normal? Stan

Check it with a temp gun, but if it is working, I don't see the fact that you can't hold your hand on it out of normal. Most people won't hold their hand against 120 degrees for long and I would expect your transmission case to be in the 170-to-200-degree range when working on a hot day.

The 2030 Technical manual directs to warming the oil to 130-160 F operating temperature for testing of a Hi-Lo unit. So, as I said I would expect it to be in in the 170-to-200-degree range on a hot day while mowing. The 130-to-160-degree range is higher than you would be able to hold your hand on. Your 401B Technical manual may give you an temperature range. I expect it is similar to the 2030 as the drivetrain is similar.
