4020 power steering

A friend has a 4020 diesel that has the front wheels (wide front) turn sharply to the left upon starting. After a few minutes running and moving the steering wheel back and forth the wheels can be brought back to center and work correctly. I haven't done any checking to find the trouble as I'm not really a 4020 mechanic, but I can follow directions from someone who knows what might be causing this. This is a hobby tractor that just sits most of its recent life or has been on tractor drives.

Thanks for all your help.

The 4020 likely needs both the steering cylinders and hand metering pump (steering control under the dash) rebuilt. This job is not for the faint of heart and yet not that bad for the experienced.

Yes, it seems like the steering valve under the dash needs rebuilt and calibrated. They arte ornery to get out and even tufer to rebuild if you have not done one. I rebuild them here and bench test [email protected]
