Oil Drain Plug-John Deere Model 60 2cyl

I've had this tractor about 25 years. It's been great but time for some routine maintenance. Todays issue is the oil drain plug won't not come out, budge. The plug is 1" diameter with a square female 5/8" triangle stamped on plug?. I didn't have the right socket so I tried what I did have without success. I haven't messed up the plug but ordered the correct socket. I will be able to use my battery rachet but I don't expect I'll be able to remove. Seems to be super tight.

My backup plan is to vacuum pump the oil out through the fill hole. Any thoughts? Rick Burns, Goat Hill Farm Shelton, wa

Is this the first time that the drain plug has given trouble? Surely the oil must have been changed several times in 25 years!

If the oil has not been changed for a few years, condensation may have created a level of water in the base of the crankcase and caused the plug to rust a bit. The plugs are standard tapered pipe threads, so replacing it is easy peasy, as any hardware store will have a replacement 1" pipe plug.

What is confusing is you saying that the plug has a "square female 5/8' triangle stamped on the plug". Generally, the plug will have a square male spud or a 1/2" or 3/4" female recessed square receptacle suitable for a 1/2' or 3/4" drive to be inserted. I've never seen a triangle socket in a plug.

If for some reason the tool you ordered does not work, weld on an appropriately sixed nut onto the plug and use that to remove it. Then replace the plug with a conventional one.

Once you get the right wrench, I'd consider a little bit of heat with a torch, provided there's no evidence of gas in the oil. Heat very briefly, let cool, try to remove.

I re-read this and thought about it some more. When was the last time that plug was out, or wasn't it ever out? Assuming never, are you sure you are trying the correct plug for crankcase drain? There are two plugs under the case that are the same size (same part number) according to the Parts Catalog. The rear most one is to drain the differential and transmission. Also, the style of plug changed at serial number 6024999/6025000

Have you tried to remove the crankcase oil filter? I'm not sure, but I would guess that crankcase oil would come out that opening too.

If all else fails, drill a hole thru it and tap it for a smaller NPT plug. I had to do that for the coolant drain plug on mine. I follow the rule of don't bust nuthin. Good luck!

Thank you all for responding. "Do no damage" I subscribe to that. I took my time. Purchased, on line, the correct, heavy duty 1/2" socket CR-MO 5/8. Borrowed my sons 1/2" DeWalt heavy duty impact. And to my surprise it slowly came off. This tractor doesn't get much use. Previously, service provided by local shop and myself. I've just rebuilt the carburetor. Doing oil change and rebuilding the fuel shut off/on. Thanks for responding in my time of need. rick
