My 4020 JD Story-

My dad passed away a few years ago and I could not part with his old 4020. Too many memories and too fond of the old girl.
I learned to drive her in 1980 when I was just ten years old.
She is mechanically pretty sound but she needs paint and some TLC.

I located and I purchased an early late 60's / 1970's era Hinson cab with roll bar a couple of years ago. It came off a JD 4320 and the guy was making the tractor into an open station. It looked pretty complete so I bought the cab and roll bar and all the plates, steps, brackets etc.

I actually took everything to a really exceptional local JD guy about two years ago in the hopes of getting it all painted and fixed up, Hinson cab installed and hopefully a JD 148 / 158 loader located, purchased and installed but after two years of sitting at his place it seems he may have too many "irons in the fire" with family and farming commitments. He is willing to help me and he wants to complete the project, but I know his time is limited these days.

At this juncture in time, my goal here is to get my dad's old 4020 (currently an open station) fixed up and repainted and put the Hinson cab on the tractor. I plan to use the tractor, but I want it to be fairly nice as I want to pass it on to my niece and nephew when my time comes. ( I am 52) I am also tired of freezing in the winter time and I plan to actually use this tractor.

Are there any JD folks / farmers out there that have done a Hinson cab restoration and installation that would be interested in doing one for hire ?

The Hinsen cab off a 4320 with Roll Guard will take some fabrication as deck is part of cab and hood is wider on 4320. Your tractor but my suggestion woul be to put and YearRound or Hiniker that is easy
add on.They will both be noisy but you can buy nice unit for $500 and sell Roll Guard for $800 and your fenders will bring $600 if nice.Any thing you do that is not factory usually doesnt add value but
would be warmer.

I agree with Larry. I sold/installed new Year-A-Round & Hiniker cabs back in the early 80's. 4320 Roll-Gard cab will be more difficult to mount on a 4020 than the other 2 cab brands.

If the newer Hinson cab has air conditioning it might be worth the extra effort. Those old ear-beater cabs not only trapped in noise but they also trapped in heat like a green house. Mounting an A/C compressor and condenser on an older 4020 could be additional challenges.

Some people filled the hollow Roll-Guard posts with sand to reduce noise and add ballast.

I basically grew up in one of those cabs, so I'm fond of your idea. Consult a parts catalog (guys on here will get you a link) and you will see what's different between a 4020 and 4320... but I'm guessing
just the tin around the hood. With the number of cabs that have been removed, I'm sure you could find the tin you needed.

In their day, they were a decent cab. I still use a 4020 with a roll gard cab daily, and I can still hear. Mine is the earlier Stolper version.

People DID occaionally put the later roll gard cabs on earlier tractors like yours... it was a factory upgrade that way vs aftermarket.

There may be a few hiccups- if your tractor is syncro, the PTO lever may not clear the front of the cab when engaged and may require modification. If your tractor is 24 volt yet, you may need to think
closely about wiring.

Keep us posted with your project... a LOT of those cabs have been ditched because they didn't look cool. They can be loud, but not much different than ROPS alone, and they kept you out of the wind, the
rain and snow, and blistering sun. I'm glad to see one go on!

If 4020 has 24 volt system then compressor clutch will need to be 24 volt for batteries to recharge correctly. 4320 cab blower will be 12 volt which will need to be changed to 24 volts. BTDT Or tractor will need to be converted to 12 volts.

You will need to fabricate panels for the lack of console on the rh side.
The 4320 hood line is 1 inch taller than the 4020.

Your tractor being a first gen, you will have to modify the floor plate some, because the seat and decks are different between the two gens.
At the rnd, it is a very feasible project.

I have a 3020 with cab in my collection of stuff I would sell very reasonable has a good heater and glass, missing
doors,if you have interest let me know. 270-799-1883 John.
