JD4020 Revival

Hello folks! We are starting to put our JD4020 back into service and there will be a ton of questions on how to make as few mistakes as possible.

This tractor belongs to my Dad, now almost 96 years young. She's a working girl and looks like it but cosmetic improvements

may come as parts come off for service. Beyond that, we like her just fine the way she is.

First order of business for us is to get it running after having sat for years. Are there any pages here

where I should start looking for this model specifically? Not having much luck searching out details, yet.

Seeking articles/advice on common problems with getting a long sitting tractor going without damaging it.

Almost everything in life has it's own combination, as you know.

As a near term example of assistance, this tractor had a loader before my Dad bought it. I'm looking for info on

JD loaders that fit and are well recommended to this model. So far the 148 and 158 have been mentioned to me.

Not entirely sure the practical differences.

Thanks very much in advance.

Welcome to this forum
Which type fuel does your 4020 use? If diesel powered metering valve in inj pump is probably stuck.
Pertaining to search for 4020 information on this site which view are you using(Classic or Modern)? Modern view has a decent search function.

JD loader models that will fit a 4020 are 46,46A,48,148,158,720. I probably forgot some loader models

Both of mine have 720 loaders.

After having sat for years, if you do try to start it be prepared for a runaway engine. The fuel pump has sat and when you open her up it may not idle back down. I had to shove a rag in the air intake to kill her. I had the air filter bowl and stack off at the time. Eventually the pump internals limber up and, in my case, now work fine.

There are rubber boots on the injector fuel rail. I would be prepared to replace those. They crack really bad after sitting. The are pretty cheap at John Deere. You can't use just fuel line as each end of the boot is a different diameter.

Have fun bringing your old iron back to life!

Regarding loaders--JD made several universal loaders that would fit many tractors, even IH M etc. But, to fit some tractors, there was a specific kit of front end parts to adapt the loader to the frame. I was advised that a 148 would fit a 70. And it does, after making several parts and drilling a couple of large holes in the cast steel frame. I might do it again, but I'd sure do some measuring with a tpe rule and vernier caliper before I did, so's I'd know what I was getting into instead of finding out with the loader suspended from a tree and the tractor driven under it. Learning by experience is good, but it's better if it's someone else's experience. Feel free to learn from mine!

Thanks very much. Part of my search is to find a loader that would bolt right up.
Certainly not all units I might find will have been connected to the same model as ours.

Thanks for the excellent suggestions and information.
During an internet search I happened to see that the 720 loader also seems to be found on the JD4020. Appreciate the confirmation.

We're really just getting started on this project and I've started here at YT. Glad my friend pointed me in this direction.
The fuel system is a focus already. I believe the filters were changed not long before the tractor was parked though that may not
keep us from replacing them in anyway. Notes about the fuel line and rubber bits will come in handy I'm sure, SETX.

Thank you and very glad to find you all here. Our tractor is a Diesel.

Will definitely keep the metering valve in mind as we move forward. Is there a trick to getting it unstuck?

Currently I'm on the Classic View but will switch to the Modern for the enhanced search. That should help greatly.

Your loader list is larger than I knew. Thanks again TxJim

SETX... You were exactly right. Those rubber boots were cracked alright. In fact they were cracked in half in most places. If I knew how to post a picture of the full separation I would. Will figure that out another evening.

Without your suggestion I'd have bought fuel line but of course, I won't now. Our first mistake averted... for now. No doubt it will come. Thanks again. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
