Hydraulic filters JD 4020

Got the fluid drained and both filters out (power shift). Problem is I can t get the filter covers reattached. Apparently spring loaded and I can t get pushed in far enough to get threads started on the bolt that pulls the cover in. Is something not right here or am I just a 250 lb weakling?

It can be difficult to push tge filter and have the bolt well lined up.
You want to make sure the area is clean and installakew seal (seal included with an aftermarket filter like fleetguard, but pay more for it at GreedyDeere mega stores.)

There is a snap ring on the bolt that is supposed to hold the plate and spring compressed and hold it all together. It likely has come out of place causing your problem. When installed properly, the
bolt starts easily and doesn't hit spring pressure until 3/4 of the way threaded in.

So thats what that snap ring is for! Is there a groove in the bolt where the ring is supposed to set or just press down and set it?
Thanks Cliff great info.

Yes, there is a groove on the bolt. Easiest way is to use a washer that just fits the bolt to push the snap ring and compress the spring. Use a piece of pipe to push on the washer.

Many thanks.

All worked well getting things back together. Problem is looks like an o ring failed as oil shot out from looks like front filter. Looks like filter o ring squished out. Not sure why maybe tightened too much. Anyway, do I need to drain entire system or just filter can to try and remedy.
