I am restoring my 44A and currently wanting to remove the fan shaft from the housing to re new the bearings and felts. Does anyone have any tips or tricks in order to press the fan in to remove the cone locks? Also while I am into it is there anything else I should be replacing? I currently have 2 bearings. Felt washer and a rubber packing seal.

I use a couple of C clamps. If the pulley is stuck to the shaft it works pretty good. A little heat might help also.

If it has the pot metal friction disks I
melted them off and replaced. Careful,
there is a ton of pressure in the spring.
When I put it back together I used anti
seize. When putting it back together it
took all 225 lbs of me hanging from the
disks to get it where I could get the
keepers in.

I used C clamps too. Hint: Use best quality C clamps. Don't ask me how I know, but let me add that it's awfully hard to find a keeper that just flew past your nose on its way to hitting the angled roof.

As others have mentioned c-clamps are a great way to compress the spring. On my 36A the retaining ring for the locks was really seized on. I used a
socket that just slipped down over the end to push on the ring, and a lot of trust in my better half while she swung the big hammer and I held the
socket. The pot metal disks were also seized to the shaft. I had to break both of them off, but I already had new on hand as I had planned to replace
them anyway.
