4430 tillage capability

A few years ago I purchased a 1973 4430 open station on the suggestions from several members here that I needed a large-frame tractor to better pull my MOCO. It does perform that function admirably, and also runs my Art's Way feed grinder/mixer.

The tractor came with duals, I have never mounted. The rears are worn severely from many road miles in the past. I don't need traction, more of turf tires for what I do.

I have been thinking of looking for a field cultivator for future use with the 4430 after chisel plowing for hay field prep. What would be a reasonable size unit to use with limited traction?

Thanks for any help.

With limited traction and plenty of time to get things done you could drop down from 18 foot to 14 foot wide tillage equipment, or install the duals and stay with 18foot equipment.

If the duals have better tread than the inside tires maybe swap them to the inside, or buy new tires for the inside. Are they all 18.4 X 38 size tires?

If production on an hourly basis is unimportant then anything that will cover the width of the tractor on up. Using a FC as a
finishing tool with minimal depth then 18-21 feet wide. Running several inches deep then 16-18 feet wide.

I've plowed 100's of acres with my 4255 with worn tires using duals pulling a 24' 3 pt JD 1010 field cultivator with spring tooth harrow attachment. I seen some people set cultivator much deeper than I did. I just operated deep enough to cover seed/fert that had been slung out.

Thank you all for the input. I bought the three point chisel plow from a neighbor and found out that I was short on traction with all eleven points in the ground. Fortunately, it had wings to fold up with two points on each, so it is now a seven point plow I can pull pretty easily without messing with tires.

I just did not want to go out and buy a 24 foot FC and find out it was too much for the tractor and just as undesireable to any other buyer... Fourteen to 16 feet will work fine. I have access to an Unverfurth rolling basket with spike tooth section that is 20 feet wide or so, and leaves a fantastic planting surface for an alfalfa/grass mix. It worked with my drill or with broadcasting, if I chose that route. I suffered for years with rough hay field surfaces, now I try to get it as smooth as glass!
