Late 4020 PS steers hard

1971 4020 Diesel PS has 2 finger steering during normal driving down the field as you make normal corrections. When turning around on headlands, if you steer fairly slow it is still 2 fingers. But the faster you try to turn the wheel, the harder it is to turn, as if there is less power assist. Equal resistance both directions. Any ideas for troubleshooting this??

What have you done to troubleshoot the issue?

Do you see leaks at steering motor, steering valve, hydraulic pump?

Could be valve adjustment issue but if no work was done recently on steering valve I would suspect pressure issue since it is occurring in both directions.

When was last time you serviced hydraulic system, fluid, filters, and screen?

Tractor came to me as a non running project after sitting for 8 years on a cattle ranch. Previous owner is long gone, no one to ask questions to about previous service. Filters and screen were clean 5 years ago when I got it. Fresh Mobil 424 oil and filters again last fall as part of doing load shaft seals. No leaks in steering system.

That's impressive that there are no hydraulic leaks. I haven't had that luck with a single new gen over the past 35 years.

You can start testing pressure to validate hydraulic pump.

Then you can start testing the steering motor and valve.

Assuming you have already lifted front end and checked wheel bearing and tie rod ends.
