'78 2040 popping rear end

I have a '78 2040 with 145 loader, 950hrs
that more and more lately is making a
noise in the rear end that sounds like a
combination of a pop and clunk which
seems to me to be coming from inside the
rear end. I can't be sure of location my
left ear is deaf so locating sounds is
unreliable for me. I've jacked the rear
up tightened both the bolts at center of
wheel and the clamps at outer rims. I've
been getting worried about internal
problems. Any ideas? Thanks

Does it have cast center rear wheels? If the rim can rotate slightly in the clamps it will make a pop sound every time the torque on the rim is reversed. Gear lash in the planetary gears and transmission is not as loud as when the rim slips.

If all wheel axle & wedge bolts are tight then next thing to do is remove rockshaft housing for a visual inspection of ring gear/pinion & spider gears/shafts

Steel rear centers. I'll double check all the fasteners then likely look up inspection procedure.

Does it have a differential lock that might be trying to engage? My 2940 would make a couple clunks sometimes when I stepped on the pedal.

It does have a diff lock which seems to work well. I use it often without issue. I don't think that's what I'm hearing

Not that familiar with the 2040, but can't you look through the fill hole for the diff and take a look with a small light?

Let me know if you find out . My 1640 with the stamped steel wheels has always made that pop sound .
Transmission is not TSS .
