5020 air cleaner

I replaced the external frame mounted air cleaner on my 5020 with the under the hood one (AR36414) and ordered the filters out of the JDparts book. They don't fit and are about twice as long as the old one in the housing. Since they are so much larger and this was one of Deere's first dry filters I am worried that the smaller/original ones were undersized and couldn't feed enough air ? The replacement housing is AR45783 and is about twice as long. Any thoughts, should I get the bigger housing or can I just run the smaller filter without problems..

Thank you in advance for all of your knowledge and sharing it....

I ordered a secondary element for the 5020 and the dealer said they had never sold one before Im not sure the part number off hand

Thats what Deere tried to tell me but the parts book shows one and they had never sold one before I called they had to order it

The shorter filter, p/n AR36044 is still available from Deere as well as A&I. This filter is used in the AR36414 canister.

Canister AR45783 was used on the later 5020's (after s/n 25,000) and I believe they offered this as an option / retrofit for the early 5020's that's why there is not a serial number break in the book. I suspect that Deere had issues with the shorter filters getting plugged up and getting sucked into the engine because of poor operator maintenance. They went to a two-piece filter system, the outer filter (larger diameter) filters the air and the smaller inner filter is a safety filter that stops the outer filter from being sucked int the engine if the operator fails to clean / replace the outer filter. The inner filter does not filter the air as it is more porous than the outer filter.
I bet there was a Service Bulletin about this at one time.

(quoted from post at 20:12:55 05/06/23) The engine will quit running long before it sucks a
steel encased air filter into the engine

There is a reason why they went to a system that included a safety filter.
When these were new, were these filters steel cased?

The safety filter is useful if, for instance, the outer filter get ruptured, or if someone forgot to tighten it. Safety element is more resustant to multiple exposure to water.
