4020 Wide Front End Spindles - Variations ?

Pulled front end off 4020 for hydraulic pump and am going to be rebuilding hubs b/c bearings are shot.

Noticed this difference between the two spindles (left/right) assuming they are interchangeable.

They are both cast part number

R27185

But one had a D7 at the end of it.

One spindle is concave on the bottom and the other looks like someone has filled it in with weld.

I was trying to think why they would have done that. I would think if the casting cracked you would replace it plus that is an odd place for a crack.

I am thinking about replacing both of them ... looks like new spindles are ~150 or so each.

Some machine shops have made new upper
shafts & welded them in place of broken
ones, as well. Many things can happen to
a sixty year old tractor?

PC for 4020 indicates they are interchangeable left and right. Yours look okay. If the tapered splines and wheel bearing surfaces are okay, go ahead and use them.

Yeah ... this 4020 is a Frankenstein ... 1965 ... so much is wrong with it. I will get the spindles and knees measured up and replace them. Thanks!
