Model A magneto short or long lug question

I have a 44 styled A I am currently looking for a mag for. Can anyone tell me how to determine if I need a short or long lug by looking at the drive on the governor. In other words does anyone have the dimensions so I can measure the depth of the drive lug on my governor to determine what mag I need. My parts manual doesn't specify.

You will need a short lug magneto for a 44. Long lugs were used up to 1939 then changed to the short lug to the end of production.

thanks for the help!

Your 1944 A was originally furnished with a WICO C magneto with a short lug drive cup. Look at parts catalog PC675, page 24. The heading on that page shows the tractor serial number range, and key #2 shows Part No. 6274 with a description of Cup, 25 degree impulse drive (short lugs, AH653R only) And here's a picture showing the difference between a short lug (top) and long lug (bottom) drive cup.

The Wico X replaced the Wico C, so there was obviously some improvements, but as a practical matter, I have tractors with both types and both work perfectly fine.
