4020 Hydraulic Pump Seal Drain Line - Too Long

Replaced hydraulic pump and bought a new pump seal drain line. it is about 12" too long. Cant really fit excess in rail and dont want it to get kinked again or caught on anything.

Looks like a swaged fitting. Anyone have any suggestions on shortening it or dealing with excess? Thanks

They sub one line to several applications. I cut the line to the length I want then take a steel line flaring
tool and heat it with a torch and melt a new plastic flare. Practice a few times on the piece you cut off.
Just make sure to slide the fitting on first. Tom

I like trying new things and adventures
as much as the next guy but if you just
make a loop with the line upwards above
the brake valve the excess line will be
out of sight and out of mind and out of
harm's way!

There is a learning curve to modifying
and flaring that *+&# plastic line.

I'm thinking you ended up with the wrong oil line. If I did my homework correctly there's 3 different current part numbers for that oil line depending on serial number range.

serial -200,999 uses AR79714 85in long

serial 210,000-251,628 uses AR87534 72in long

serial 251,629- uses AR79711 65in long.

If you haven't already, you'll also need 2 R64170 adaptor fittings because the line has larger fittings than the original. These lines attached to the tractor in different places which is why there's different lengths (some went to the brake valve others went to the main case?? can't remember) As far as I can tell these part numbers hold true regardless of transmission type. Double check your serial number and part number.

Cut off to the right length and then flare it with a flaring
tool . Local truck shop has the right size line and then
reuse the old fittings flare and install

One line fit all that what JD been sending for years now. Either cut it off and flare it or better
yet buy the original size plastic tubing for a couple bucks and make your own using old flare nuts
over. I quit buying the miss-fits long ago as you can make it for pennies on the dollar and keep it
original. All said and done it don't look like a cob job!! There is no value in the bigger ugly line
as the original fittings restrict to the same original flow value. I guess maybe it does not get
pinched as easy under loader frames and tool box bolts. One thing for sure the new JD line looks
like a cob job!!

Thanks to everyone for the additional information.

Here is what I have now:

My 4020 is serial tagged pre 200,999 so I ordered AR79714 and indeed the line is 85" on the dot.

The old line which I didn't remove until I had my all the stuff I thought I needed measured 62" so I am guessing it is AR79711 which is supposed to be 65" OR someone cut it to length.

Since I paid ~$50 for the new line I am going to cut it and try to shape it with a flaring tool from Harbor Freight. I have the old line to practice with so hopefully I will get it right.

Attached a couple pics of the old line which shows the worn plastic and the new line which is in much nicer shape. Also the return connection to the hydraulic reservoir which is tied into the return from the brake valve.

Harbor Freight $14.99 flaring tool.

Heated up the tool and the line flared right out.

Perfect length!

Thanks for the suggestion.
