JD M serial number plate

I have read on here about the legality of replacing a serial number plate and how a dealership can help with that. I went by the dealership today and the regional manager said they couldnt help me. I showed a photo of mine withe number clearly visible but the tag is pretty much illegible. I was directed to the aftermarket. He said that after 50 years it was perfectly legal to do that. I have a 49 M. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Charles

They never did give one out for an M. The replacement tag doesn't look like the original, more like the New Generation ones with a bar code on it.

Sure it's legal. There's no title for old tractors so you can put any number you want on there. As far as I know there are no aftermarket plates for an M. You could buy a prettier plate on fleabay but the number would be wrong and could mess someone up ordering parts.

I would leave it alone. The serial number is clear as day and that's all that matters.

BTW, Deere lost the records on the M so no other info is available.

As MSD said; Only the later Dubuque tractors could you get a replacement plate from Deere... Buy a plate on EBAY--four rivets--keep your original serial-number- no problem!!!!
