4630 Power steering... Tim S and other experts

Hi... I have a new to me 4630 that's had some hydraulic issues- there was metal in hydraulic scvs, etc. We've corrected a lot of them, but we are still experiencing issues with the power steering. Both the metering valve in the cab and main valve atop the engine have been gone through by qualified technicians. However, it turns harder one way than the other, and it seems to want to turn back some after steering it in a given direction- for example, if you turn right, when you stop turning, it will try to return left a bit. I'm wondering if there's air in the system somewhere?? It's a late 4630 with the newer system, and it has two cylinders in the motor vs one on a smaller tractor like a 4430.

Any advice before we take the bottom motor apart???

It still seems like the steering brick above the motor is the issue,,remove the plugs on each end of it you should be able to push the spool valve both way easily with your fingers

Thanks for the advice, Tim. Unfortunately the valve moves freely in the block in either direction. Any other thoughts?

Did the repair guy do anything to the steering brick,,like sand it to free it up ?? If that is what happened the spool can leak past and cause strange things to happen.. The way the system works is the metering pump at the base of the steering wheel pumps oil ether left or right to the brick ,,moving the spool left or right directing oil to one side or the other for the turn to happen,, the little piston in the steer motor rides along with the main piston directing oil back to the brick to center the spool and to keep it from over steering... Lumpy or hard steering is from the steering brick spool dragging, usually from small fragments of metal in the system , this makes the metering pump turn hard, making the steer wheel turn harder..If your steer brick is in good condition I would go through the steering motor next.
