Oliver 1800A Water Temperatue Gauge Problems

I started my 1800 gas today for the first time this year and the water temperature gauge spiked all thw way to high side. When I dropped the rpm to 600, it seemed to work fine. But as soon as I raise the rpms above 1000, the temp indicator starts to sputter and spiked to the high side of the gauge. What would cause this? I tried to find where the thermocouple is located in the block, and I can't find it any where.

How does that gauge work without a thermocouple?

It seems like you misplaced you post on an Oliver in the John Deere section. The gauge is electrical, so you are looking for a sending unit instead of thermal bulb as a manual or capillary tube type would have if that is what you mean. There is an example sending unit in the link. It is possible that the wire insulation has rubbed through and is grounding, possibly the problem spot is near the fan and the harder blowing air is moving the wire to short out.
