Small round hole on left side of generator

Hi.I have a delco-Remy generator model 1100506 on a John Deere B tractor and would like to know what purpose the small hole serves approximately 1/8 diameter. It's below the oil cap on the left side where the wiring is. I started removing dirt out of it and stopped after about 3/16-1/4 in depth. Thanks in advance.

A photo would be helpful.

It sounds like it is on the end bell of the genny below the oil fill hole. If that is the case, then it might just be a mounting hole for a bracket of some sort. These were made for many applications other than just on a tractor and is even possibly a replacement that isn't exactly the same as what came on the tractor originally. So it might not even have a purpose in this application.

The hole on this generator is towards back of tractor.

(quoted from post at 15:35:25 04/05/23) What needs to be done, should it be picked out and then something inserted?

If there is, in fact, a small cup plug or Welch plug recessed a bit down in the hole to keep dirt and moisture out NOTHING needs to be done besides adding a few drops of oil to the capped oiler at each end of the generator, as directed in the Operator's Manual.

(Seems excessive to me, but it's a scan of the original Operator's Manual instructions.)
