noise in PTO

Hello. Re: a '52 John Deere B narrow front end. When the PTO shaft is engaged there is a rumbling sound. When turning the PTO by hand with the tractor shut down, there is a clicking noise, could this possibly be a worn bearing? What would the fix entail?

Sometimes there is a limit to what can be determined without opening things up and taking a look. What that all would entail is difficult to say because we do not know what all is on the back of your tractor. Is it just a flat back or does it have a powertrol?

Service manuals and parts manuals are something that you should look into having. The service manual, even the IT one that covers several different models, will give you disassembly and reassembly instructions and the parts manual will give you exploded diagrams as well as part numbers.

Had the first reduction gear cover off of a 50, and the drive gear for the pto was all rusted up badly. Water had collected there over the years and ruined it. Later tractors had a drain plug there to fix the problem.
