Substitute??? Square head bolts are readily available at numerous places. McMaster Carr, John Deere, Fastenal, salvage yard, ..........

Google is your friend.

I get new square head bolts. Some searching and 5/8-11 x 4, plain black finish, are available in grade 8 as JD specs call for. You may be as well off to bite the bullet and get them at JD for 3 or 4 if you have to pay shipping from other sources. Have you checked Fastenal (I know they aren't very friendly to non commercial customers in many places), or other industrial supply house near you? You may end up with shipping charges.

Here are a couple I found on line.

(quoted from post at 19:35:58 03/29/23) I buy my 4 headed bolts from Lexar Industrial.com or 570-851-3650. They ship fast and had my bolts in two days. They are also on EBAY.

I may have missed them, but I don't see any grade 8 listed on their website or eBay items. Not just Lexar, but number of sites have 5/8-11 x 4 in grades 2, 5, or A307, which are lower grades than the grade 8 JD spec'd for the 08H4694 wheel bolts. They may have, or be able to get grade 8, I would say you would need to call and ask, if they are not listed. And the nuts should be a heavy hex of an equivalent grade. I try to stay with the spec'd grades when available.

I stupidly flailed on the bolts without the nuts on...hoping to dress them up once the die handle gets here

Thread files and knife files are also handy to clean up threads. OTC makes a tool (#7402 I think) with interchangeable dies that goes on good threads and then can be turned to thread off over the bad threads. There are split hex dies that work the same way, install on good threads then back off over the damaged areas. Of course, other than the files, the tools could cost you more than 4 new bolts form JD.
