4020 Fuel Tank Strap Repair ?

Broke bolts on fuel tank straps ... really rusted and bent to boot.

Looks like these are spot welds on the strap holding the bolt in.

Does anyone have any information on repair?

Looks like I could break the weld if I could find the right bolt inside and then have someone spot weld it again.

Thanks.

You could drill the welds out and then remove the
broken piece it isnt just a bolt though it has a half
moon shape to it with a bolt built into it could probably
cut the bolt part off then drill a hole through the half
moon shape and put a regular bolt in . Close the strap
around it and reweld the strap

Some years ago when I got my gas 4020, Ingrid, the lower tank strap T-bolt was broken/missing.

I fabbed up a clevis sort of thing welded to a length of threaded rod and didn't have to deal with the spot welds in the loop at the end of the flat strap.

I happened to have the old girl in the shop and took this photo tonight in response to your post.

The photo doesn't show a good view of what I did, and the welds are a bit crude (even for me) but the tank is still snug in place after ten years or so!

And I didn't have to deal with drilling the spot welds and opening up the loop in the strap to make the repair.

Thanks for the comments.

Here is what I came up with for a repair:

Cut off old t-bolt and drove out.

Inserted 3/8 dowel nut 1/4 all thread, barrel nut 1/4 to 3/8 adapter, 3/8 all thread to 3 1/2 overall length.

Secured all thread with loctite but hopefully the tension from the nut will hold things in place ... time will tell.
