John Deere A axles

I am working on replacing axle seals and bearings on a 1952 John Deere A. I was just wondering how tight to tighten the nut on the end of the axle? THe book just
says to tighten as tight as possible but you also dont want bearings to be too tight so i was just wondering what everyone else has been doing?

Use a bar to keep the final drive gear from turning and tighten the castellated nut as tight as possible with a 20'' open end wrench. Then loosen the nut just enough to install a new cotter pin through a castellation and the axle.

From the book I thought it was tighten tight so as to seat the bearings and loosen it to allow .004 to .006 inch end play or something like that . I do not like them to have end play so I take them to zero end play and no preload. Easier to do and feel where you are at without the felts installed. I put them in last after I set the axles to zero end play.
