Deere 300 metal in hydraulic oil

Was working on fixing some leaks on backhoe and came across this mess and was wondering if this is just replace some parts and flush system or full tear down and clean to fix the after math of what I think is a brake liner.

Would be interested to hear some opinions from others who know more about these older backhoes and 1020 based machines to see if it's worth while fixing something like this or just run tractor till it dies.

Its possible that its just never had a fluid change and
a flushed system in the last 50 years. If it were mine Id
let it drain a few days then dump 50 or 20 gallon of
diesel fuel in it then dump that then fill with the
recommended oil run it a few hours working it then
dump that and refill . Ive done that In the past on an
old neglected machine to Clean all the junk out of the
system
 

When I first bought the machine 3 years ago the previous owner had changed out the hydraulic oil. then I changed it again probly within the first year after buying as the hydraulic system started to stop working after running for a few hours then was good after sitting for bit.

I ended up changing transmission pump as at that time I thought maybe it had gone bad from some of the symptoms I was having at the time but turned I had just clogged up the new filter. But I was able to split tractor and put back together in weekend so it wasn't so bad just annoying to realize it was just a clogged filter and I didn't need to go threw all the work.

So i've been just changing out filters fairly regularly to keep the backhoe going as I needed it for clearing a few acres of trees and moving dirty around as I've been building a house from ground up for last couple years and just couldn't make time to really look into problem as I figured if I opened it up again it may never go back together again.

I'm basicly done building house now and almost done with dirt moving and backhoe stuff so If I take machine down for a big service it doesn't effect me as much now and I got more free time to do that kinda of thing.

Now I'm just trying to feel out if it's worth doing anything with or just finish up what I'm doing and sell it for what ever I can get for it if it's still running by then. I only paid 5000 for it and don't have whole lot of money into it.

I did pick up an old Ford skid steer cl 40 with a blown engine that I think maybe better to throw money at then the backhoe as I won't have as much need for the digging once the last of the stumps get pulled
 
Hello Justin welcome to YT! I do not know if you have
just purchased this machine or have had it a while. If
you have have had it a while there is some self-
incrimination going on there. Unfortunately in my
opinion anything you put towards repair of that
machine is just not going to pencil out. I am going to
say it will not be long and the hydraulic pump is going
to be done. Running it until it quits is probably you
best option. Then ..Parts for sale.. is probably the best
option. Keep in mind if you want to do it with a good
conscience any cylinder you sell should be flushed out
with diesel and then clean hydraulic fluid. I do not even
think it would be worth pulling the final drives to check
the brakes. I afraid once you start the investment snow
ball is just going to keep rolling. Good Luck!
 
That pocket in the clutch housing where the steering shaft and yoke is collects crap, as circulation through it is poor, in my opinion. Clean it out and keep the drain hole open.

If you are having to change filters regularly as you say I would suspect the brakes need repair. Your description sounds like a 2030 I picked up. The screen had a lot of fiber material on it and the filter was plugged. Cleaned the screen and changed the filter. Soon the filter was plugged again and the oil started to show silver flakes. A brake job solved the problem. One side was metal to metal.
 

Ditto what URM stated. Metal fines of that magnitude are very difficult to flush. You could add a magnet to hyd oil reservoir to help catch metal fines
 

Thanks look forward to lurking around this forum as I got a skid steer and a b275 I want to restore as there a better fit for my future property needs.

I haven't had it for too long but I haven't been the best with it either I can admit that. I do try and keep up with fluids but as far as maintenance goes I haven't wanted to take a bite into that as the original plan was to buy then use then sell and see what I can recoup as this machine has saved me thousands in equipment rentals over the course of my property development.

But I know if it stops works completely it's worth it's weight in scrap more or less. But I was kinda hoping it was kinda like a change out the brakes and good to go type thing but I know metal reaps havoc in any pressurized system so I didn't have my hopes up too much.

I do like the magnet idea the thought didn't cross my mind.

As far as parting it out in future that is a maybe. but me being in Canada I imagine my options are limited for what I can ship and still be worth while for anyone wanting parts.
