Can someone tell me the factory specs for the crankshaft journals for a model 40? I'd like to order bearings, but I don't know if I need oversized.

Not only the crank specs , the service manual specs everything for the tractor. Important to have .

As suggested the first thing is to get the service manual, there will be many other specs and info you will need to do a rebuild. John Deere publication number SM2013 is the service manual for the 40 tractors and SM2000 (Tractors and Engines (Overview) of Older Tractors is recommended to go along with SM2013.

Before worrying about ordering bearings, the crank needs to be mic'd for out of round, and taper. If it is not true and needs to be turned, I would have the shop doing the work get the bearings. That way they "own" any fit issues related to the crank and bearings.

I have a shop manual for the 40C with all the relevant specs, but I loaned it out and haven't been able to get in touch with the guy. I also have a set of micrometers and measured the journals. Both main bearing journals are 2.397 with no measureable difference between 90 degree measurements. The rod journals both measure 2.248 min and 2.249 max at 90 degrees. I think I can tolerate 1mil out of round without too much trouble.

As I recall, I think these measurements show I can go with the standard bearings. I was just hoping someone had the info handy so I could get them ordered without waiting to get my shop manual back.

Rod journal 2.498" - 2.499"
Main journal 2.397" - 2.398"
