1020 running issue after operating for about an hour

1967 JD 1020 runs great for about an hour. Then it occasionally tries, sometimes successfully to stop running as if the key was turned off. It does not miss, it just tries to die or it does die. When this happens, it seems to be associated with the tractor bouncing or moving abruptly on rough terrain. Eventually it will do it on smooth terrain. It is very intermittent. I did have a continuity issue with power to the ignition (bad wire) but that has been fixed and the carb was overhauled not long ago. My thought is the Governor is misbehaving. The tractor runs great until the moment this mystery occurs. If it dies, it starts up and runs fine until the next event. Any help is appreciated.

Check the fuel tank for debris. I had a tractor act the same way it turned out to be a ruler in the tank. Every once in a while it would cover the outlet and
cut off the fuel supply. Someone must have been checking fuel level and dropped the ruler in the tank. Good luck

Although Mr. Poss has a good suggestion usually the
symptoms of lack of fuel delivery has some
unevenness to it or sputtering. An electrical problem is
more likely to shut off as if you turned off the power to
the ignition. That tractor has a larger multi terminal
plug on the ignition switch. I would unplug that and
check for clean tight terminal connections there and
no melting.

Another thing could be happening but it is rare. The
coil may be failing, next time it stops. Quickly go down
a carefully check the coil for being extremely hot. If
this is what you find the coil could very likely be your
problem.

Thanks to ask for the suggestions. I failed to mention the recent replacement of the key switch connector and coil, however I will check these again.

No shutdown solenoid. My Grandfather deleted it out with the adjustable (I call it jet) jet.
This tractor sat for at least 10 years. I drained all fluids, new plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button, battery, fuel pump, coil, carb overhaul. Got it running, replaced all fluids again. Got it running smoothly and it did so for months.
When this intermittent issue began, I installed a temporary jumper from the battery to the coil to eliminate any continuity issues with power to the coil. When the problem starts, turn on the jumper and it makes no difference so if it is electrical, it would have to start at the coil.

I just had a little flash of DeJaVu. That happened on my Yamaha 4 wheeler. Happened a lot in fact. On rough ground.
I had to bend the float, but I'm struggling to remember which way. There wasn't enough gas in the bowl and when it
got jumping around, it was literally running out of gas. Seems like I bent it up to let more gas in.

My 1020 often gets the needle stuck in the carb and it acts like it is shutting off because the fuel bowl is too full. It does it intermittently on mine with no
real pattern. I also do not have the fuel shut off on my tractor anymore. I have pulled off the air intake hose and found a puddle of fuel before when this
happens. Just another thought.

new to the forum but just seen this...I had a bunch of problems with my 1020 last year and found out it was the coil. I thought i ran out of gas but couldn't even put 5 gallons in it so i ended up replacing the coil with one from my 214 :) and it runs great. If you have points i think you need one with an internal resistor but if it is upgraded to electronic, you don't.

Exactly the same problem with my little gas 135 MF, and years ago the same thing with my 430 JD gas. Both times there was trash in the tank trying to go thru the little opening to the fuel bowl and enough of it being sloshed around on rough ground would stop up the fuel bowl inlet and shut off the gas. After replacing everything on my little 430 like you have done without any success,The old parts man at our dealership told me to remove the tank and clean it out which I did and strained it through an old tee shirt. It was unreal the amount of trash from that tank that I thought was clean. Never had any more problems. When the 135 started cutting off, I immediately washed out the tank, problem solved... now both tractors were supposed to have a little cone of screen fitted into the intake of the gas bowl, but neither one had the screens, so that allowed the trash to plug the hole.

My learned lesson was this:
Gas don't care what color the sheet metal is, if it can't get though. I hope you get it going. Boowah in South Ga.
