800 Series Hitch Question

I have what appears to be an 800 series hitch that came with a John Deere brush mower/ stalk cutter. My question is about the upper links. I see in the parts manual and in many pictures that the upper links are connected to a pair of brackets on the axle housing. The Hitch that I have has them connected to the forward end of the lower draft links. I'm wondering if this was a normal set up or if it was modified for some application. If anyone has information on this I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Buck

Thank you for your response. I have the parts manual for the 800, 800A and 801 hitch # JD-P-PC397 and also have the Operators manual for the 801 Traction-Trol Hitch # JD-O-OMA12755 and none of them show the hitch hooked the same as it is on my Hitch. I will have to figure out how to add pictures to this and get a picture of the way it is hooked up to see if anyone has seen it like that. Seems weird that it was this way for over 40 years. it works great so far. I'll get some pic's and update this

Here is a copy and paste on picture posting.

At the end of 2022 the forum host here changed the
requirements to new posters to be able to post photos
from a post count of 5 posts to 1 post. I believe this
change was only made on ..Modern View.. so you need
to post from there. If you see ..Modern View.. in a gray
bar just above the message text click on that it will
take you to Modern View. In Modern View you will see
the Classic View option in a red outlined box at the top,
just adding this as a way to verify you are in ..Modern
View.. Try to post your picture in Modern. It should go
through if you have at least posted once if everything I
understood about the change is correct. This
restriction was a way to keep internet bad guys from
dropping in and posting bad pictures with hidden
viruses. Pictures post through the ..Choose files..
button or some such name just below where it says
..Upload Photos/Videos.. down lower in the ..New post
and reply windows, see attached pic. They cannot be
pasted into the text area as a file.

When you say ''upper links'' are you referring to the links that take the place of a top link on a
3-point hitch. If so, one end should attach to a bracket on the axle housing and the other end
attaches to an evener bar.

I can't imagine how they would work hooked up the way you describe your setup.

It will be interesting to see a picture of what you have. I've studied 800 series hitches for over 15 years and even given worshops on them at the Gathering of the Green over the years and never have seen the two upper links attached to the same point as the draft arms are attached on the drawbar hitch frame. It would tend to make the top links too short for most implements even when extended to their full length and the attitude alignmentment would be a bit off. But almost anything is possible. I've seen some very strange aftermarket top link set ups. But this is a new one for me. Looking forward to your pictures. If you can't get them posted send them to my email address: [email protected] and I will try help get them posted for you.

It will take a while to get the pictures of my set up as my tractor shed has a couple of feet of snow piled up in front of it. I will get the pictures as soon as I can and get them posted.

Deanvp, Were you at this last years Gathering of the Green 2022?
My wife and I were there and sat thru a couple of seminars. We loved the time spent there.

Sorry for the long delay on getting pictures posted, at the time we were chatting about the hitch there was a lot of snow keeping my tractor in the shed. I finally got it out and hooked to the brush cutter to change out my blades and take some pictures. I think I have them attached to this post.

That is definitively not like any other 800 series hitch I have seen. Even the connection to the rock shaft arms has been modified. I suspect the mods were made to compensate for not having the correct mast head for the implement being used.

I had not even looked at the connection to the rock shaft. I'm guessing my Dad made most of the mods on this one because he did not have all the correct parts when he purchased the brush cutter he needed to do what it took to make it work. He did not come across the correct rock shaft arms until later in life, we still have the ones he built to get by until he found some to purchase. Things are a lot easier to find now with the internet. Interesting looking at the parts book vs the hitch we have and noting the differences
