B fan shaft noises

Hi all, recently purchased my first 2 cyl, a 1945 B. Had rain water in the oil and broken oil pump coupling. Got all that fixed by searching posts and using the manuals I bought. Cleaned the carb and mag and got it running and it's got a good bit of noise in the fan shaft area. Im so deaf I cant tell if it's the front or back depends on which end I'm listening to. The noise is best discribed as a growl. Ive heard similar from both miss meshed gears and pitted bearing races. On to my question. I see online that new gears are available for late serial B, above 201,000 and 50s. above my serial which is 167,xyz. Not sure if I even need them but what is the differace in the late gears and mine? I have a machine shop so easy modifications are possible. Thanks in advance!

Butch, You might try calling Wilson Farms, phone 740-694-5071 to see if they have the parts you need. I got this number from an old GM add so it may not still be good. I have not seen any recent adds so they may not even be in business any more but it would not hurt to call. They are near Fredricktown, Oh.

Thanks Dan, I'm in Fredericktown and
didn't even think about them, smart eh?
yes they are still in business. New to
the 2cyl and the parts sources for them.

Butch, check the part numbers for the late As, they may use the same gears. 5/16 play at the tips of the fan is not bad at all. Those old bearings for the governor and fanshaft are hard to find and $$$ if you do.

You can use a screwdriver as a stethescope to determine where the noise is coming from. The gears in the governor are a matched set. If you determine the noise is coming from the bearing housing by the fan, be sure to mark the gears before you take it apart so as not to disrupt the wear pattern of the gears.

Have you considered that the friction washers are worn out (gone) and that is what is making the noise? I had that happen on my 49 A years ago. Can not remember exactly what the symptoms were but I do remember the noise.

After they have been run a while they will develop a wear pattern. If you don't mesh the teeth together as they were they will probably be noisy, and all the adjusting in the world will not get rid of that noise. The H restoration guide recommends the fan shaft and governor be removed as a single unit and installed as a single unit. There is quite a procedure outlined in the guide for setting up the governor and fan shaft so it can be installed as one unit. Thank you for your reply.

Well I have it apart. The bearings on the governor shaft are extremely rough, fan shaft bearings make some noise too. Guess it will be All four plus the gaskets. Gears look decent.

As I recall you have a machine shop. You can replace those with tapered roller bearings by turning some spacers to take up the diameter and length difference at the cup ends. I'm away from home just now but I can get you dimensions when I get home. dan41h has info on them too.
