4020 generator light functions backwards

I have a '65 4020 24V, positive ground, power shift tractor. I just purchased this tractor late last fall and put a new Brillman harness on it. I do not know if it was working before, but everything operates correctly except for the gen light. It appears to operate backwards. Key on,engine off, the light is out. Key on, engine idling, light is dim. As you speed up the engine the light gets brighter. The generator is charging and the more it charges, the brighter the light gets. The oil pressure light operates correctly. What gives? Our other 4020 was converted to 12V at least 35 years ago.Should have done that to this one but I wanted to keep it original.

This is normal behavior as far as I know for 24V. 12V conversion you lose the GEN light unless you go out of your way to wire it up.

Don't let the 24 Volt detractors wear you down, those systems work just fine if attention is paid to detail when working with them.

My GUESS would be that the power source for the indicator lamp is from the wrong side of the system.

It's probably wired wrong. Look at the electrical schematic in the technical manual and test the appropriate cicuits.

I have done a dozen or 12 volt conversions and the gen light always works just fine. Now the furl guage is another story. Sometimes they do sometimes they don't. Tom

You lose the indicator light on a 12 volt conversion if you use a one wire alternator.

Use a 3 wire wire alternator, connect the lamp to #1 pin of Delco alternator and lamp will work. You may need to change the lamp connection on the switch to bypass a resistor used in 24 volt circuit.

This tractor has NOT been converted to 12V, it is still a 24V, positive ground tractor and want to keep it that way. Would have
been easier to convert it, but want to keep it original.

Then do as woreout suggested and revisit the other end of the indicator light wire. You have a 12v + side and a 12v - side. Move the wire from the side its on to the other side.

Study the diagram below CLOSELY, especially that the batteries are connected EXACTLY as shown.

Check that Blue and Brown (1 and 2) wires are connected properly at starter, at key switch and at generator/regulator.

Check that #9 from the generator light is connected properly at the key switch, in the same triple connector as #1.

FOUND IT!!! Thanks everybody! The Brillman wire harness does not have the 3 pole plugs on it so I had the
wires 1 position off. Moved them to the right spot and everything became good! Again
Thanks you guys! I thought I was losing my mind!

If your 4020 is wired as original from Deere, one battery to chassis will be positive ground the other battery to chassis will be
negative ground.
