60 Head Repair

A few years back, I bought a 60 with the typical head/manifold leak on the clutch side of the tractor. Happily, I found a NOS head and replaced the old one with that and bought a new manifold as well. Since then, the old head has been kicking around the shop as I tend to hang onto such things for reasons I'm not exactly sure of myself. But as I get older, moving it now and then becomes a chore, and I've decided I need to make decision about fixing it or let it move on to it's next career as a mooring anchor. So, what I'm wondering, what is the limit as to how much can be safely planed off the manifold mating surface in order to make this a functional part? Or is it worth the expense of having it built up and machined?

I have fixed many of those. Don't remember how much can be removed ? For some reason I think those
ports stick up some ? and as long as you stay above where they would be removed you are ok. I also
remember welding up several of them too. I use machinable type nickle rod in an arc welder. I even did
one while still on the tractor. Just filled the openings with wet rags and then between an angle
grinder and a file got it good enough to work again. Maybe just sell it as is and let the new owner
deal with it ? unless you are in need of a head now ?

Thanks for the replies. I got the NOS head really reasonable and had all the appropriate work done on it, otherwise I would have tried to reuse the original one. I haven't put a straight edge on it and measured, but I don't think it was all that bad. I'm not sure is there is much demand for a used head in need of repair, but I was thinking that if I could get it fixed without too much invested, it might make a good piece of swap material.

Preferably, I would like to have it planed down if possible, which is why I'm looking for the limit of what can be taken off. But if I can't find that, I've got machinable nickel rod and might take a stab at what Mike M suggested. If I mess it up, it's not as if I am out of a lot.

Mike (NE Ohio), actually it was you thread on the A that got me thinking I should be front burnering this project.

As long as that head is not cracked either from freezing or from heat it should be a good demand for
it. They pretty much all need the top resurfaced by now.

Look at your tractor, then you will know. The only thing I was worried about was the manifold hitting the cylinder block or upper water pipe mount on the back side.

Just sell it as a core and the guy can decide what he
wants to do. No sense throwing a handful of money into
something that you dont know u will get back.
