Broken Hydraulic Control Lever

John Deere 1020, 1962 model. Today I managed to break off the hydraulics control lever while trying to raise and lower a brushhog on the rear hydraulics. I have a front end loader on the tractor also. The tractor has been sitting for the winter. I had noticed it being harder to operate the control arm last fall, so I guess it maybe rusted and froze up inside. I tried to remove the housing, 3 bolts and in a tight place behind the front hydraulics pump. The housing moves about 1/8 from the chassis, but seems to stop there. I don't want to pry it off, thinking something inside the chassis case is holding it. There is also about a 1 plug with a 1/2 drive in the case, but surrounded by the hydraulic control mounting bracket. The bracket is not held by it, I don't think. There is also a bolt on top the chassis case and near where the control shaft enters it, that maybe holding the shaft in..again, I don't know what's in there...I need advise on how to remove it, whether I can buy parts, or how to jerry-rig it so I have control of my rear hydraulics again...Thanks for any advise...JOHN

I suspect you are referring to the hitch control lever? If so the control shaft that extends into the rockshaft housing has a arm on it that is retained by a spring pin. To remove this arm the rockshaft cover will have to be removed and partially disassembled. When reinstalling after repair, make sure your draft control arm is correctly positioned / aligned in control valve. DW

I'm not sure we're talking the same control lever. I'm talking about the one that I move up or down to raise and lower the 3 point hitch side arms. If we're on the same item, than I have unbolted the rockshaft housing (as you refer to it) from then tractor case, but it is hung up about 1/8 from the tractor. I'm afraid to pry it away, that I might break something within the tractor case. Is it safe to forcefully pry it away, or is the control shaft fastened to a rocker arm or some such thing inside?

When removing rockshaft cover one must dislodge the cam follower(shaded part) from 3 pt control linkage. This is the same part that WTW referred to as the "draft arm" that must be replaced in control linkage when rockshaft housing is replaced on trans case.

Thank you all for the responses, but I still haven't a clue. Are we talking about the same tractor?..Mine is a 1962 vintage 40 hp. or so Model 1020 rowcrop tractor. The hydraulic control lever I'm talking about sits on the side of the tractor chassis near my right knee. There is a second hydraulic control higher up near my right elbow that controls the front end loader. My trouble is with the lower one that controls my 3 point hitch arms. All linkages are internal to the case.???

The lever you are talking about is the lever that raises the three point arms.. Part you need is arm At19838 or AT26350 by serial number. It does get moisture and rust, can seize up.. After you get apart, you my be able to weld??? Yes, you will need to remove the rocker shaft housing. There is a lever on the inside end of that arm.. See the service manual or parts book.. When put together , anti-seize shaft that has the arm on it..

TxJim, Thanks for the reply and pic. We are on the same page. I didn't realize it is called a rockshaft control lever. I'm trying to remove the assembly shown in the parts plan #03C15 that you forwarded, from the rockshaft housing on part plan #03C05, and it is not coming loose. Do I need to remove the entire Rockshaft housing to get to whatever is holding it in???
