trying to help a friend resurrect a 70 diesel. We had it running but had no oil pressure. After digging awhile we found a broken oil pump drive shaft...
Is that a weak point on these ?...no water in the oil to freeze it but I don't know it's history...

I found the same thing in one that I repaired 20 years ago. I replaced the shaft and everything has been good ever since. I thought it was kind of a large shaft to break like that but it happens.

At one point in time there was water in the crankcase that settled to the bottom where the oil pump is located. The water entered the screen into the drive gears. Someone probably tried to pull start it in very cold weather and snapped the shaft as the gears were encased in ice. I think it is a 3/4 inch shaft so someone jerked it pretty good. I collect 70 diesels and have seen that happen several times. It is a sizeable job to repair it as you cannot simply drop the pump out the bottom of the tractor. Several oil lines to disconnect. Should be concerned that if it was run long without oil pressure the main and rod bearing may have been damaged. That's when it gets expensive...costs exceed the value of the tractor.
