2955 clutch

I have a customer with the 2955 that is having clutch issues. They have put a clutch in it every year for the last 3 years. It is now slipping when you put it in high gear. Only has around 100 hours on it. This tractor has the hydraulic clutch. I don't see any adjustment as such on the linkage. The clutch engages when the pedals almost completely out. It would appear to me that there is no free play causing the clutch to slip. My guess is that is why the previous clutches have failed. Can anyone shed any light on this. I am a Kubota guy and normally don't work on many John deere's. Thank you

IIRC, that clutch is ''self-adjusting'' and the master cylinder needs to function properly internally for that to happen.

Has it been replaced, and if so with an OEM unit or equivalent?

I don't know. I know the last time they were concerned that the flywheel had been machined improperly and they replace the flywheel and the complete clutch assembly. I will ask that question. Thank you for your reply.

One would need a 2955 tech manual to confirm but due to presence of adjustable link in photo I seriously doubt 2955 clutch with master/slave cylinder is self adjusting.

Jim, take a CLOSE look at where #14 goes/attaches to.

It appears to me to be a 'brace'' from the master cylinder mounting point to the clutch pedal pivot.

What do you think?

The master cylinder has about 3 pages of instruction to adjust the master cylinder alone. If not done correctly it will fry a hydralic throw out cylinder and bearing in about 2hrs at full throttle.

I also forgot to say the main adjustment is the threaded end of the master cylinder plunger. What you also need is a piece of clear tubing to watch the fluid level rise and drain back as you adjust the plunger. You should see a brake bleed valve under the master cylinder. Fluid is DOT 4.

I can't find my manual. So going off memory the first bit of an investigation I would do is connect a clear plastic line from the bleed valve and run it up to the top of the cab roof. Open the bleed valve and slowly pump the clutch pedal by hand so that the fluid is near the top of the door opening. As soon as you stop pumping and release the pedal the fluid should start to drain back down the tube at a nice steady rate. This is where adjusting the master cylinder plunger is done. If it doesn't drain you fry the slave cylinder and throw out bearing. If it drains at an extremely slow rate this maybe what is causing the short clutch life.
