John Deere H

Yes. Assembly number AH1144R, Starting Equipment for Tractors with Lighting Equipment was available for field installation. It consisted of the new flywheel with a ring gear, the flywheel guard, the starter, and some miscellaneous parts. It required lighting equipment (generator, wiring harness, lights, light switch, cut-out relay, v-belt, pulley for fan shaft, etc. to be installed first. There was an assembly number for a field-add for the lighting equipment also: AH949R. All of this material was only for tractors after S/N 27000. Before that S/N, starting and lighting equipment wasn't available and wouldn't fit (except for the generator lighting system made by K-W).

I wonder if any kits are around on parts tractors? If you just wanted to start the tractor and charge the battery separately would you need all the other parts?

Nicely packaged kits are long gone, I'm afraid. However, if your tractor's S/N is 27000 or greater, you should be able to cannibalize a parts tractor and get a flywheel with ring gear and a starter (including the starter mounting bracket) and except for a battery, battery cables, and battery mounting components, you would be good to go. That would let you start the tractor but would require occasional separate charging.

There have been a few tractors earlier than S/N 27000 which have been modified to accept a starter, but it requires a fair amount of very careful work to locate, then drill and tap the main case for mounting holes for the starter as well as swapping out a number of components to make room for a battery.

(quoted from post at 16:42:36 03/08/23) Was there a kit to change a hand start H to electric start?

If you search the Minneapolis Craigslist for John Deere H parts, the parts you need are there. Might be to far to ship as the flywheel would be expensive.

I have a flywheel with gear, starter and starter bracket for a model H. It came off a H that did not have the proper holes drilled correctly I changed it back to hand start. They are available.
