John Deere 4020 - Rear crank seal tool

Good day!

As yet another casualty of the conglomerates taking control it appears that I no longer enjoy an amicable relationship with the service department of my local dealership, so renting tools much less borrowing them on the rare occasion is no longer permissible even despite the purchase of the part requiring the use of said tool from their store....

All bitterness aside, what recommendations are there for a quality seal installation tool(rear crank position) for the 4020 et al using the new unitized seal(P/N RE520035)?

Some of the tools I've looked at online appear to be of a good design using a substantial centering hub & pushing hub along with a thrust bearing to reduce friction however the reviews these tool have received are less than comforting citing fitment / alignment issues, etc.

TIA

If you are close to southwest WI I would loan you mine. Are you close to the dealer? You might be better off having them do it rather than
buying a tool you might never need again. Tom

Thanks Tom! I'm a little too far away to make your offer practical but it is appreciated.

As for having them do it, I think the saying "it'll be a cold day in ____" comes to mind. LOL

Also, thinking that the tool could be a good investment for the future should I upgrade from the 3020 & 4020s to the "larger, newer" JD machines with the 404 & 466 engines as I understand they use the same tool?

You need the tool to install the seal properly. I studied the seal and engine to determine if I could concoct a home-made tool. I figured there would be an installation failure not matter what and
went ahead and bought the tool. Figured I'd be working on these engines in the future.

I made one when I did our 4020 gas. Same rear seal as a diesel IIRC. I found a section of pipe with a
collar on it. That made it thick enough. Then all you need to know is how much of a step to put in it to
hold the seal the proper distance from the wear ring.

Those tools will fit a ton of tractors really new generation on up. Ive only ever bought one crank seal tool for green ones. Mine isnt perfect I dont use the threaded part anymore so I Wont suggest my brand but the last 5 or so Ive used a hammer on the tool lightly driving it in the middle and around the outside like your supposed to do anyway and it still works great.

This is the one I have $200,,I use it a lot..

So....I'm going to have to eat some crow with regard to my earlier statement. It turns out there was some miscommunication at the dealership and now I have been loaned the use of the seal installation tool. On that count my faith in humanity has been restored. My comments on the overall negative aspects of the conglomerates still stand though. LOL

Thanks to all for their responses!
