John Deere H Not running well

My H has always ran good for the 20 years I have had it but now it starting a little hard but will fire right up but needs 1/2 choke to keep running. I put a new battery on and changed the air filter oil thinking there may be water in it. Gas is fresh and sedimate bowel shows clean gas. Any ideas what could be wrong? It always been inside a unheated building but not started very often. Cleddy

see if you have a full flow fuel at carb fuel line -cross plug wires ,to make a backfire ,may help or carb may need cleaned

Take gas line off carburetor and see if you have good flow. If it has an oil pressure gas shutoff it will have to be cranked over.

Sounds as if you've picked up some rust or dirt in the carb. Probably needs to be taken apart and cleaned up. Partially plugged jet most likely. Good Luck! John

Check to make sure the fuel filter is not clogging up. They had a screen on the carburetor end of the fuel line fitting at the carb. Remove the line and then unscrew the fitting from the carb & you'll likely see a tubular screen that may be clogging up on you.

I got into it and the problem was a chunk of rust or something got down in the Sedimate bowel entrance and impossible to get out until the whole fuel line and 3 way valve was removed and take to work bench and air compressor. My sedimate bowel is a new replacement from supply store and it almost impossible to service in that location. I am thinkin about truing to rebuild the original which when open would involve poking a wire through it from the top. Does not appear it was shot-Just may have needed some new packing and gasket. I hadn't realized until yesterday that the original valve only requires a 1/4 turn to open-shut??? Cleddy
