2640 diesel fuel system

I recently had to take off my fuel tank because I had a leak. Put the tank back on filled with about five gallons of fuel. Followed the directions in the manual for bleeding the lines but I open the screw on the right side of the filter and pump the little lever and have even turned engine to change the cam lobe and I am not getting any fuel out of the filter. The pump lever does not seem like it pushes very hard.
How long should you have to pump the lever to get fuel spurting out or is the pump for bleeding the system broke and ideas or suggestions very much appreciated.

Maybe try a new filter and put more fuel in and just let it sit awhile if primer doesn't seem to be pumping. Try blowing back into tank.

The more fuel in the tank the easier to prime. If that first pipe out of the tank is empty all the way to the bottom it can be incredibly difficult to prime. I keep travel tank of clear diesel because of this. Its way easier to start a ran empty truck with 60 gallons back in it than 5 when it has raised the fuel level up the standpipe a foot.

Ditto the higher the fuel level is in the fuel tank the easier it is to prime inj pump. I've in the past carefully used short bursts of compressed air to help push fuel from tank to inj pump.

Yeah, Those don't always pump very well. I usually fill the tank over half and open the bleeders. Go have a sandwich and most times when you come back it will have self bleed. Then do the same thing on the injector pump. Hopefully the injector lines didn't drain out otherwise your going to have to crack them open at the injectors and crank it over until you get fuel out of each one. Good Luck! John

It's possible the fuel lift pump is not functioning.

It should bring up fuel and rather quickly when the hand lever is cycled IF the pump's ''arm'' is on the low point of the cam, IMHO.

Wore out I hadnt ever thought of that when doing it before but
I suppose if it was all the way in on the top of a lobe no
pumping. It is hovever unlikely that it would land there twice
because he did attempt to start it. Ill have to remember to
bump the starter though if I have one not wanting to prime
thats a good idea
Ive never had to have a cam out on any Deere 4 cylinders
does it share a lobe with something or does it have to have its
own? I would assume one pump per 2 crankshaft revolutions
would be enough...

Fuel lift pump lube is third from the front, between the valve operating lobes for cylinder #1 and #2.

To make the pump lever actuate the pump diaphragm you must make a full 90 degree movement of lever. The first 40 degrees does nothing. Pull lever until it is straight out and then push it back in and repeat. You will feel the diagram resistance when you make full stroke of lever. Hope this helps. DW

I would vote with the person who said to crack the fittings on the injector pump. I had a 2640 that was the devil to prime after changing the fuel filter. new pump did not solve the problem; opening up downstream did.
