I am looking at a 4240S and this would be my first green tractor. The John Deere dealer says all the parts are available for it but its an unusual combination for a 4240 having some 50 Series upgrades particularly being mechanical 4wd and a turbo added onto it. I did see a 4040S for sale as well and the seller says a 4040S is the same as a 4050 just manufactured in the Germany plant. Can anyone tell me about this tractor? Would it be similar to a 4250 or no?
 
The 4240S was assembled in germany using parts from waterloo. Many were sold in Europe. In Europe, only the 4450 to the 4850 were imported from 1982 to 1986 after the 40 series ended.
Mannheim made two models to fill the gap between the utilities and the 4450: the 115 flywheel hp 4040S, and the 132hp 4240S.
The transmission on both is the same and same as the 4250. You get the safety of an handbrake, too.Three point hitch have the extra cylinders to lift more.
Those two tractors were MFWD only, and those have a nice ZF front axle with the much simpler (like todays tractors), center steering ram bolted to the front axle. They turn very sharp, and the front axle bracket is much simpler (no steering motor)..

Hood size is same as a 4240, but you have a turbo 466, same as the late 4250, or Euro 4050. Many 4240 sold in europe from 78 to 82 already had an extra turbo added by the dealer to stop on the bad rap deere had on fuel consumption with the na tractors with the dm pumps (4230 and 4240).

In Europe, competition was the Fiat 1180 or 1380, IH 1455 with the Dt402, Deutz DX145, Renault 145-14 or fendt 615 with the MWM engines, all fuel seepers compared to the us deere or ih guzzlers. Those competitors, all good pullers with a goid mfwd at an affordable price, were the reason why Deere had to make those two models.

In usa, deere had no serious competition during all the 70s anf most of the 80s.



I like these tractors, 4020 size, 4440 power, MFWD with big front tires.
The 4040S has the 6359T engine, less power, good tractor still, but not has good as the 4240S.

They are bullet proof. Only tractors wity troubles were the ones that were pushed way beyond their limits, above 175 PTO.

15 miles away, there is one pushing 23K hours and no overhauls. Very hard to start, but still pulls like a freight train.

If you show me some pictures of the tractor, i can tell you from where it came from. France was the biggest market for those, but some were sold in germany, uk, etc...

I have a European 4040 with the 359t engine. If you have access, I need detailed pictures of the right hand side compressor and alternator mounting brackets. Tore mine down and I've either misplaced some or it's been rigged. Been a while replacing water pump.
Any help appreciated.

Around 1990 we had a German model. Good tractor, best thing I remember was it had a 540 PTO shaft that turned 1000 RPM. First time I hooked to the 1360 discbine I thought it was going to lift off the ground it was spinning so fast.
