4020 Load Control Shaft Replacement

Doing a load control shaft replacement on a 4020. Remember seeing a response to my 4010 LC replacement that the LC selector should be in D. JD repair manual says nothing about the selector position at all in the repair section.

Can anyone tell me why?

I didn't have it in D on my 4010 and it seems to be working ok.

Appreciate any input.

Thanks.

The theory is to keep the ''fork'' on the internal draft control mechanism lined up with the path of the load control shaft as it goes back in.

If your repair turned out well there's not need to obsess over the other possibilities, IMHO.

Yes,, a lot can go wrong,,if the fork is out of line you can shear the wear tab off,,then the operation is a success but the patient died,,, when that happens the final drives need to come off, and the differential lifted out...

Placing L/D in "D" allows arm to release any pressure on L/D shaft would could allow shaft to move easier in trans case bushings. Follower(item 12)on later model tractors is what Tim was referring to as getting sheared off of arm.

Thanks to everyone for that information.

My 4010 doesn't have that follower since it is a different design. Maybe that is why I dodged a bullet there.

The 4020 is a 1965 and has the same LC arm design as the 4010 so it also does not have that follower. I placed it in D anyway before I drove the shaft out. Was shining a light in there looking at the arm and couldn't see that follower so checked out parts diagrams on JD site to see difference.

Just dropped drawbar support today. Front pin came out super hard. Hope front and rear bushings come out easier on it.

Need to figure out what size bushings to use in the housing.

JD web site lists oversize bushings as available ... maybe to accommodate for wear in the casting?

I will see if I can get a measurement on them when I drive them out.
