3020 steering motor repair

The steering motor on my 3020 is leaking. A stream comes from the vent tube when turning the steering wheel.

I have a service manual. Pic below shows the parts. I presume it needs O-rings on the pistons, but does the spindle need to come out, too? And I presume that the front axle must be dropped to access the motor? Sounds like a big job. Yes?

The tractor is a 1964 3020 Diesel with PowerShift, serial number 59255.

Frt axle & 1 side frame must be removed. Yes spindle must be removed so piston can be R&R to replace o-rings. Pistons require timing before replacing spindle.

These pic's may help you a bit.the puller pushes off 2 long bolts which catches the pinion to keep it from falling before your ready for it...

Just did one. Front axle must be removed . You do not remove side rails, just loosen bolts on both sides. I removed the fuel tank , make
removal easier. A forklift or something to support on wheels to slide to the unit out the front. Leave the front cast piece on and remove with
unit .took the unit to a skilled mechanic for seal and bearings replacement. Leaking seal was my issue

Leaving the motor in place with one frame rail removed is the most efficient by far.

That said, if you're anything like me, Murphy visits on a regular basis and the piston end caps on the mounted side will invariably leak because they are the only ones you didn't replace. LOL

As an option you can build a simple adapter for a floor jack to allow removal & installation of the motor in a relatively "safe" manner.
