Raise the front end until the tires are 1 inch off the ground. Remove the nut from the shaft. Place a soft hammer (like copper or brass) on top of the shaft. Strike the soft hammer with a two pound steel hammer. One or two strikes usually does it.
DO NOT STRIKE THE SHAFT WITH A STEEL HAMMER!!!!!!
 
Block of hard wood will work instead of the soft hammer, always used the hard wood for a job like that.
